Jimmy-Jay Morgan, a 17-year-old Southampton striker, has been signed by Chelsea for an initial $3 million cost and a further $3 million in add-ons.
The highly coveted kid arrives primarily to strengthen the Blues’ academy squads after going unused as a substitute at St Mary’s.
The young forward, who can score with both feet and his head, has a deal that runs through June 2026.
Morgan spent some time in Chelsea’s academy after being discovered when he was eight years old, but he later moved back to Southampton because of the hardships of making the long drives to and from his home on the south coast.
Morgan has 18 months left on his current contract, but Southampton was compelled to accept the sale because of the enormous amount of the capital club’s offer and his refusal to sign a new one, as Standard Sport revealed earlier this month.
The Blues beat out a number of clubs, notably Leeds, to secure his services because they want to spend extensively on their development teams as part of their Vision 2030 plans.
Jim Fraser, the director of youth development and recruitment at Chelsea, said: “By adding Jimmy-Jay to our Academy squads, we have gained a player with good potential. We are thrilled that he has selected Chelsea for this next, crucial stage of his growth because of his capacity to stand out as an explosive striker.
