After scoring Liverpool’s second against Everton at home on Monday night, Cody Gakpo scored his first goal for the club.
The Netherlands international was waiting at the back post as the Reds launched a spectacular counterattack against Everton early in the second half.
Right after finding Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson swept the ball to the right flank, where Trent Alexander-Arnold was set up by the traveling Salah. Gakpo then converted the low cross.
After joining the club during the January transfer window, the former PSV Eindhoven star finally scored for Liverpool, breaking a 545-minute goalless streak.
Gakpo has played seven times for the Reds and had yet to score or provide an assist.
When Jadon Sancho had a similar performance in his first seven games for the Red Devils, it sparked taunting from Manchester United supporters, who too had been made fun of by opponents, earning him the famed “007” tag.
With the goal against Everton on Monday night at Anfield, Liverpool’s new player avoided that destiny and doubled Jurgen Klopp’s team’s lead.
The 23-year-old acknowledged he could be contributing more to Liverpool before the game.
He said to Sky Sports: “I knew a little bit about the game before it started, but it’s a pretty crucial game for the team.
We’re now struggling a little bit, but we can really shine in that game, and it may give us some momentum.
“Correct now, it’s a little bit difficult for the whole team to get into the right positions and score the goals together. I believe I can help the club there as well so that once we start scoring goals, we can start winning and getting into a good rhythm.
“I’m enjoying it [at Liverpool], but it can be hard to in some situations when you don’t get the outcomes you desire.
“I can do more for me personally and for my own game than I showed, and that’s what I’m attempting to do.
“I and the team can significantly improve together. We can still do amazing things this season because I see a lot of quality in the guys at practice and I know what I’m capable of.
