Andy Townsend queries Kai Havertz’s proposal to Chelsea.
Commentator and pundit Andy Townsend expressed his ignorance about Kai Havertz’s contribution to Chelsea’s forward line on Talksport Radio (h/t Metro).
Havertz, who joined west London in 2020 for a reported £75.8 million sum from Bayer Leverkusen, hasn’t been able to live up to the promise he displayed in the Bundesliga before moving there.
Because he scored the winning goal in the 2021 Champions League final, the 23-year-name old’s will go down in Chelsea history, but his entire performance has been well below average.
When asked what Havertz contributes to the team, Townsend responded as follows (h/t Metro):
Thomas Tuchel also had problems there, so Graham Potter is not the only one having problems. He struggled to get the greatest performance out of Kai Havertz and was unable to inspire Timo Werner to fire.
I haven’t really seen Kai Havertz develop to the point where I can confidently predict his future success. Simply put, I’m not sure how I feel about him. Graham Potter has a difficult task, but there is sufficient staff to come up with better ideas and stronger lineups for the top of the field.
For a guy that plays the majority of his games as a number nine, the German international’s six goals and one assist total over 31 appearances this season are just unacceptable.
He has had difficulty getting the simplest things properly. We still don’t know what his best position at Chelsea is after more than two seasons.
Havertz is without a doubt talented and capable of producing at the highest level. But for it to work in a Chelsea shirt, something isn’t connecting. Is it because he hasn’t been given the greatest tools by the managers? Or has the athlete fallen short of his potential? It is challenging to respond to this.
Whatever the cause, the 23-year-old is one of the key factors contributing to the Blues’ inability to score goals. They have scored three fewer league goals this season than Erling Haaland alone, which is somewhat disappointing given that we want to be a team that competes with Manchester City for championships.
It’s obvious that Chelsea needs to spend money on a number nine in the summer. The management group will decide whether to part ways with Havertz or keep him to play off the new striker.
