Following a tedious Premier League loss to Aston Villa, Chelsea seemed to have made their opinion regarding the sacking of Graham Potter apparent. The strain on Potter’s tenure in west London has increased dramatically in recent weeks after another failed attempt to win at Stamford Bridge, following a 2-2 draw with Everton.
Throughout six games played in all competitions without a win in January and February, co-owner Todd Boehly was forced to make a critical firing choice. With home matches against Leeds and Borussia Dortmund coming up at the time, Potter appeared to have been given a crucial four days to maintain his position.
Potter can now breathe easily for at least a few more weeks thanks to the Blues’ victories in both contests. The pressure has returned due to more disappointing performances, but Chelsea doesn’t seem to be dismissing Potter out of instinct.
According to The Sun, Potter will do the pre-match press conference for Liverpool on Monday at the Cobham training facility. This was verified in a media e-mail that went out at 8:32 on Sunday morning. Hence, that at least seems to indicate Chelsea’s readiness to fire Potter immediately, and thus, the key match that might decide whether or not Potter is retained.
Internal discussions regarding Potter were to be held in the upcoming days, according to Fabrizio Romano. Nevertheless, given that no departure has been announced and that a press conference will be held on Monday, it appears that Potter will remain in his position for the time being.
Akin to the significance of previous encounters with Dortmund and Leeds, failure to defeat Liverpool might result in Potter being fired. Ben Jacobs of CBS Sports claimed that today at Chelsea, things are “business as usual” (Sunday).
