In order to strengthen their respective backlines, Liverpool and Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing Jurrier Timber from Ajax this summer.
The likes of Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Atletico Madrid, and Marseille are reportedly also interested in hiring the versatile Dutchman, who can play both right-back and centre defence, according to HITC via Liverpool Echo, as reported by Anfield Watch’s Twitter account.
Last summer, there were numerous rumours that Timber might join Manchester United. Erik ten Hag knew the player well from his time as an assistant coach at Ajax. However, no move occurred, therefore Manchester United went to his former Ajax teammate Lisandro Martinez, who joined the club for an amount thought to be around £57.5 million, plus add-ons.
An earlier report from the Dutch television programme Veronica Offside that Timber’s girlfriend had been seen looking for homes in Liverpool gave credence to the idea that Liverpool would actually be interested in the 21-year-old. To sign him, the Reds will have to defeat some stiff competition from competing teams in Europe.
As a full Dutch international who has been called up by Louis van Gaal to play for the Netherlands at the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup, Timber has already played a significant amount of football for a player only 21 years old. Due to Liverpool’s recent switch to a new system, the Dutchman’s adaptability may potentially prove to be of great value to the Reds.
Due to Joel Matip’s unclear future, Trent Alexander-Arnold has shifted into the middle of the pitch recently. However, reports indicate that Liverpool may be looking to add a defender this summer. Timber won’t be short on admirers, and if Manchester United make an approach, he might decide to rejoin old Ajax manager Erik ten Hag, but he clearly checks a lot of Liverpool’s boxes.
