Mason Mount, a star for Chelsea, was previously referred to by Jurgen Klopp as a “£60 million player,” as rumours about Liverpool planning a surprise move for the England international spread.
The 24-year-old only has one year left on his Stamford Bridge deal, and it is widely anticipated that he will leave this summer so that Chelsea can profit from his exit rather than simply letting him go. Having said that, Manchester United has already made three offers to the Blues for Mount.
This has led to speculation that United is now ready to back out of the agreement or, at the very least, limit their offer to £50 million plus $5 million in add-ons. Liverpool now has the opportunity to try and sabotage a transaction that once appeared to be about to happen.
Klopp has previously admitted that he believes Mount is a player worth more than the three offers United have so far made, which may have hurt the Reds’ negotiating position.
When Mount made his England debut alongside other Chelsea academy alums in 2019, the Liverpool manager said, “Tammy Abraham is now a £60million player.” Mason Mount, without a doubt. There has previously been [Callum] Hudson-Odoi before that.
If an agreement of their own cannot be struck, it is believed that Chelsea will demand at least £65 million before allowing Mount to depart. However, they may be disturbed by United’s diminished interest because it raises the potential that their talented midfielder will leave for nothing the next season.
The midfielder reportedly told incoming Blues manager Mauricio Pochettino that if his future is not determined by then, he will maintain professionalism and show up for preseason training as scheduled. This is according to The Telegraph.
Mount is anticipated to travel with Chelsea to the United States for a preseason tour if he is still a Blues player at that time.
Liverpool is in serious need of new reinforcements, but United is receiving all the attention.
Alexis Mac Allister has previously signed by the Reds, but it won’t be enough to close this window’s transaction.
Liverpool bid farewell to all three of James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain at the end of last season, meaning Klopp needs more midfield reinforcements and needs them sooner rather than later.
Mount could end up being the perfect addition as Klopp aims to bounce back from a disappointing season last time out.
