Andre Onana may not be the only goalkeeper to arrive at Old Trafford this summer…
According to reports, Yann Sommer of Bayern Munich and Andre Onana of Inter Milan are both targets for Manchester United.
Are Man United signing Onana and Sommer?
After David de Gea’s Old Trafford contract ended at the end of June, Erik ten Hag and the Red Devils are looking for a new custodian, with Onana appearing to be the top target.
According to reports, personal arrangements have already been decided upon between United and the Cameroon international, with only a fee still to be decided.
On Wednesday, Fabrizio Romano stated that the player is eager to transfer and that a contract is in place, but the Serie A club has rejected a £34 million offer plus $5 million in add-ons.
However, despite the lingering takeover controversy, United is ratcheting up their summer activity after securing a transfer for Mason Mount. As a result, another custodian may be on the way to Manchester alongside Onana in the coming months.
On Wednesday, TEAMtalk issued a Man United transfer update regarding the Red Devils’ pursuit for a custodian.
According to the report, Onana is Old Trafford’s top priority, and United is working hard to make a trade happen. But Sommer is the top option since “the club are still keen on more options to back-up future number one Onana.”
United see Sommer as an ideal addition to bolter Ten Hag’s goalkeeping ranks even further and it is believed that Bayern Munich ‘would be open to a deal’. The Switzerland international has two years remaining on his current contract, so a fee would need to be agreed ahead of an Old Trafford transfer.
Just who is Yann Sommer?
Sommer, 34, started his career at FC Basel in Switzerland before transferring to Borussia Monchengladbach in 2014.
Before heading to Bayern Munich in January, the custodian spent nine years with the Bundesliga team, making a total of 335 games across all competitions. Sommer has participated 25 times since joining Bayern, earning a Bundesliga champions medal on the final weekend.
As Sommer nears the end of his career and has five choices to select from for the upcoming season, including players like Manuel Neuer and Alexander Nubel, he may be open to the notion of joining United in the Premier League.
Should he relocate to Manchester, he would offer a wealth of expertise at the top level. Joe Scally, a defender for Monchengladbach, praised Sommer, an 83-cap member of the Swiss national team, calling him “the best in the world” and “unbelievable.”
He is the world’s best. He carries out this every week. He accomplished the same thing against Bayern in our season opener last year.
Because we are aware that he is the finest goaltender, we simply demand it from him in every game. He inspires the team and the defense with such confidence because we know that if anything goes wrong, he would come to our aid. He really is unbelievable.
A transfer could well be one to monitor alongside Onana, and should Sommer arrive, he could look to provide cover in domestic cup competitions, with Onana possibly featuring heavily in the Premier League and Champions League.
