Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Arsenal were looking to sign a Bundesliga centre-back before switching their focus to Jurrien Timber instead.
The Ajax star is virtually done with the paperwork for his switch to The Emirates and is almost ready to make an initial £36 million move to north London.
Shamier, Timber’s brother, shared a photo of a farewell celebration for the high-paying transfer on his Instagram stories on Sunday night.
‘Jurrien’s departure party!’ was written alongside an image of Timber dressed in an Arsenal jersey on a huge banner surrounded by balloons. I’ll see you on the London streets.
Romano revealed that the Gunners were interested in RB Leipzig defender Mohamed Simakan earlier this summer, so things could have turned out very differently.
Romano made this assertion in his CaughtOffside exclusive column, but it now seems extremely improbable that the player will go.
Leipzig has already sold Dominik Szoboszlai to Liverpool for a move that might net them £60 million, so they don’t need to sell.
Timber is chosen by Arsenal over Simakan.
Simakan was one of the names on Arsenal’s defensive wish list this summer, Romano continued, citing earlier reports. However, Arsenal ultimately decided to acquire Jurrien Timber, so I believe they are happy with him. To be completely honest, I don’t see another player moving into that position.
“The situation for Simakan is now quiet and also, Leipzig already made big money with the sale of Dominik Szoboszlai.”
Given that Josko Gvardiol is about to join Premier League champions Manchester City, Simakan sticking put may not come as a surprise.
The Croatian, who is widely considered as the best centre defender in the world, has already conducted conversations with City about a potential £86 million transfer to The Etihad.
The Gunners anticipate making the outstanding Ajax star Timber their new player this week.
