According to Graeme Souness, Ederson, the custodian for Manchester City, is on par with Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne.
The custodian finished his sixth season with the Manchester club by winning his first Champions League, second FA Cup, and fifth Premier League championship.
One commentator has outlined the reasons why he believes City are the favorites to win the Premier League title once again as the treble winners get ready to embark on their upcoming season.
According to Souness, Ederson is just as vital as Haaland and De Bruyne.
When analyzing the strength of City’s roster going into the 2017 Premier League season, Souness had this to say on talkSPORT.
“Man City has the strongest group of players in the history of the English game,” he asserted.
“If you remove the custodian, Haaland, and De Bruyne, and whoever is being substituted after that, it’s like-for-like in terms of quality, in my opinion.
They have a very huge squad and exceptional quality. Therefore, I give them their favorites once more this year, and the others are “catch me if you can.”
City signed the Brazilian back in the 2017 summer transfer window from Benfica in a deal worth a reported fee of £35m.
Since then, the 29-year-old has made 289 appearances for the Citizens in all competitions, across which he has conceded 223 goals, kept 139 clean sheets, and won numerous trophies along the way.
With the highest save percentage (90.3%) of any custodian who made more than three appearances in the European competition, the Brazil international showed last season how crucial he can be for Pep Guardiola’s team as they won the Champions League.
He made five stops in the final against Inter Milan to help the team win the Champions League and complete the treble in addition to keeping another clean sheet.
As a result, he received an 8.1/10 match rating from SofaScore, making him the player with the highest rating for City that evening in Istanbul.
All of this makes it clear why Souness believes Ederson may be compared to De Bruyne and Haaland in terms of importance to this City team.
