A protest by some Manchester United fans over Mason Greenwood’s probable roster spot is in the works.
Greenwood, 21, was charged with attempted rape and assault, among other offenses, but in February, the Crown Prosecution Service closed the case and withdrew all charges against him.
Since then, United has conducted its own internal inquiry. Before the start of the season, the team promised, they would decide on the player.
‘Female Fans Against Greenwood’s Return’ has issued a statement outlining preparations for a demonstration prior to United’s game against Wolves on Monday, August 14.
“Today, we female Manchester United supporters are demanding that the club abide by their duty of care towards their female supporters and employees and demonstrate a zero tolerance approach to acts of violence against women by refusing to bring Mason Greenwood back into the squad,” they claimed in the statement.
“It is abundantly obvious that returning Greenwood legitimizes and normalizes domestic violence and sexual assault.
It conveys to other athletes, as well as the men and boys who look up to them, that mistreating women is acceptable, unpunished, and won’t harm you or harm your career.
“We are requesting that the club act honorably. For their supporters, for their staff, for the millions of young people who look up to our players as heroes and role models around the world, and for the millions of women whose lives have been ruined by violence and abuse.
