After drawing with Chelsea on the opening day at Stamford Bridge, Jürgen Klopp’s team has already won two straight matches, over AFC Bournemouth and Newcastle United.
The Reds’ final game of the opening stretch will be against Aston Villa on Sunday at Anfield, and then there will be a September international break.
The club has won both of their games despite being down to 10 men in each, and Gakpo, who has played in all three games, has been inspired by what he has seen thus far.
“I think we did quite well,” the No. 18 said to Liverpoolfc.com. Despite the fact that we had a chance to win the game, getting a point at Stamford Bridge is still something to build on.
“Two wins in a row is fantastic, especially the most recent one [at Newcastle], it was really nice, [but] we have to keep working and keep winning.”

On the dramatic victory at Newcastle, achieved with 10 men, last weekend…
It was really crazy! I think we deserved it as well. We played really good, even though we were down with one player. We tried to keep calm, stay calm on the ball and at the end we got some spaces and then we’ve got Darwin, who was on his bike and shot two wonderful goals. We were really happy.
On his versatility, being able to play as a No.8, No.9 and winger…
When necessary, I believe it is beneficial to both me and the team, but ultimately, I believe it comes down to what will help the team win the game. I believe that I currently play in the eight and the nine. All I need to do is get better at both spots. I obviously played nine a lot last season, so I’m a little more accustomed to playing there. I can get better as an eight and then I can support the team more.
On returning to Anfield on Sunday against Villa…
It is incredible each time. The fans are fantastic, in my opinion. They are very essential to us, as you can see from the most recent home game. When we were trailing by one goal, they simply tried to motivate us to get an equalizer before we won. They also contributed to our victory, so we must return even more victories to them. Aston Villa is a good team, but so are we. All we need to do is show up prepared and do our best.
