Before the postponement, Oleksandr Usyk was nearing the conclusion of a rigorous training camp.
Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk’s impending undisputed world heavyweight title battle is a historic one for boxing history since the victor will become the first fighter to carry all four world heavyweight title belts.
But there are always hiccups in the planning of fights this big, and this past Friday’s fight postponement was one of the worst ones. Fury’s severe cut sustained while sparring was the reason for this, making it impossible for them to meet with Usyk on February 17.
The fight has since been rescheduled for May 18 in Saudi Arabia, but it does not lessen the sacrifices that both men have had to make during what will undoubtedly have been demanding preparation camps.
Usyk discussed some of the compromises he had to make while preparing for the original February 17 in Spain in an interview with BBC Sport. One of those costs was missing the birth of his second kid at the end of January.
The former undisputed cruiserweight world champion admitted that it is possible to overlook these significant personal achievements, though, and he is now excited to spend a few days in Ukraine during the little break in training before his fight with Fury.
“I’m still happy – things happen, it’s life,” Usyk stated.
“I’m thrilled to be heading to Ukraine right now. I saw my wife and my two daughters. I go to church and offer prayers. A little respite before returning to my tent.”
