Roy Hodgson returned to Crystal Palace in 2023
According to rumours, Roy Hodgson, the manager who is under fire, will be replaced by Oliver Glasner, the Europa League winner, if Crystal Palace is prepared to make a move.
With the squad in danger of relegation, Hodgson returned to Selhurst Park in March 2023 on a temporary contract. He was retained for the 2023–24 season following a strong finish to the season, but the pressure has increased on the former England manager following a record of three victories in the last 17 league games.
It was believed that the 76-year-old may lose his job if his club had fallen short against Sheffield United in January. His three points in that game gave him some time, but Hodgson’s decision to bring on top player Michael Olise at a 3-0 deficit against Brighton hasn’t helped.
Several names, notably former Premier League managers Julen Lopetegui and Steve Cooper, have been connected to Hodgson’s position. However, Glasner, the former manager of Eintracht Frankfurt, appears to be a front-runner right now.
The Guardian claims that Glasner is ‘set up’ in the event that Hodgson is freed of his responsibilities. The 49-year-old Austrian captained Frankfurt to Europa League triumph in 2022, defeating Rangers in the championship game and West Ham in the semifinals. However, he departed the team a year later.
According to the same newspaper, Palace has made attempts but been unable to sign Kieran McKenna, who is striving for a promotion to the Premier League with Ipswich Town. With Palace just five points above the relegation zone, Steve Parish, the owner who lured Hodgson back to South London, is reportedly convinced that a change may be needed. According to The Mail, talks about a replacement have already started.
It’s believed that pressure on Hodgson has increased following Monday’s home loss to Chelsea. Jefferson Lerma gave Palace the lead at the break, but a brace from former Eagles loanee Conor Gallagher helped Chelsea win 3-1.
We lose three goals to one in the end, but I don’t think that was a fair reflection on the way the game was played,” Hodgson said to the club’s media following Monday night’s defeat. “I believe that today’s punishment was very severe for the squad, considering their performance, degree of resolve, restrained aggression, and mindset.
