The players that makeup Atletico Madrid’s first team now are considering their roster for the upcoming campaign, particularly those who would like to stay on as first-team members.
While a lot of conjecture has been around Mario Hermoso lately, there is growing optimism that he will ink a new contract soon. A more clear future awaits Stefan Savic, another Atleti defender whose contract expires in the summer.
Savic has been more of a squad player for Atleti this season, and head coach Diego Simeone may have the final say over whether or not to keep him around in the summer. This is due to reports from Marca stating that if Montenegrin plays three more games (45 minutes or more) before the season ends, he will automatically be eligible for a one-year extension.
Whether Savic meets this requirement and, consequently, continues at Atletico Madrid for an additional year, is still up in the air. Given that Cesar Azpilicueta and Gabriel Paulista have both joined throughout the season, it is unclear if he is still necessary.
