The World Boxing Council President has stated that there may be five judges engaged in Tyson Fury vs. Oleksandr Usyk, which means there could be some significant modifications to the rating system.
The WBC and lineal heavyweight champion Tyson Fury and the WBA, WBO, and IBF title holder Usyk will finally square off in Saudi Arabia on May 18, the eagerly awaited date for this highly anticipated fight has been rescheduled after the original date was canceled for Fury’s cut.
The WBC organization has reportedly advocated for the use of more ringside officials to score the fight, with president Mauricio Sulaiman expressing the hope that video replays will be used and adding that any controversy in a fight of this magnitude would not be proper.
He indeed expressed his desire to see five or six judges present at ringside to Sky Sports.
That’s what I would advise. We’ll see. It’s tough to get change in the boxing sport. We’re traditionalists and purists who oppose change. I’ll keep putting out the suggestion. A portion of those involved in the decision-making process find the proposal appealing. We’ll see.
He continued by talking about a remote scoring system that the WBC has created and is using in certain circumstances.
“Yes, we have a remote scoring system that trains and assesses international ring officials. We designed a WBC system where they score in real-time.
Fights conducted under this system have shown us that the likelihood of an incorrect verdict decreases with the number of referees who score a fight. A bad night may happen to anyone.
“You still win the fight even if one judge has a rough night and the other two make the right decision. After a tough struggle between the two judges, the outcome of the entire match could change in one round. However, the chance of an erroneous score decreases with the number of officials. However, we’ll see.
Since this is the largest heavyweight match to occur in 25 years, everyone may be happy with the improvements made.
