Football player Ilias Chair of Queens Park Rangers was sentenced to prison for using a rock to fracture the skull of a truck driver.
Ilias Chair, a QPR star with 223 appearances, was born and raised in Antwerp, where the incident involving the Morocco international took place. A Belgian court has sentenced Chair to a year in prison, with a further year suspended.
During a January hearing, the public prosecutor for Antwerp stated: “Many individuals involved claim that Ilias Chair struck (victim) Niels T with a stone, knocking him out.” For Niels T, the repercussions were severe.
He was brought to the hospital in Reims in critical condition after suffering a severe two-centimeter-long skull fracture.
Subsequently, he spent a considerable amount of time recuperating in a hospital in Belgium and was unable to resume his work as a truck driver for an extended period. He was nearly killed by the strike, and the ramifications are still being felt.
Niels T, the victim’s attorney, stated: “My client nearly lost his life; surgeons were required to save him.”
“He still experiences negative reactions from being struck by a rock every day, and he was unable to work for a considerable amount of time.”
Meanwhile, the Championship team QPR issued the following statement: “The club is, and has been, in regular contact with Ilias Chair’s legal team regarding an assault charge that has been made against him.”
The legal process has not yet come to an end. As a result, the club will not be commenting further at this time.
Chair is anticipated to continue playing for QPR during his sentencing appeal.
