Mason Greenwood has decided on his plans after Sir Jim Ratcliffe took charge at Manchester United.
Mason Greenwood, who spent a year on loan at Getafe, has made up his mind to remain at Manchester United for the upcoming campaign. With the release of a statement last summer stating his decision not to play for United, the 22-year-old has the Red Devils in a dilemma.
After being listed for sale, the one-cap England player failed to attract any interest and spent the season on loan at La Liga team Getafe. Due to his success in Spain, Greenwood has drawn interest from teams like Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in advance of a possible long-term contract.
However, as Sir Jim Ratcliffe and company settle in, there is a new hierarchy at Old Trafford. When questioned about the possibility of the young forward joining United again, the INEOS boss did offer Greenwood a lifeline. Greenwood now has a say in the plans for the upcoming campaign.
According to The Sun, Greenwood would reject a long-term transfer to Barcelona provided United made it apparent that he could rejoin the team. Having not played for the team in more than two years, he is rumored to feel that he owes the supporters and Erik ten Hag something.
Should he be offered the chance to play for United once more and be included in the team for the upcoming season, he would supposedly be “on the quickest flight home.” Nonetheless, the Red Devils are willing to sell Greenwood and are targeting a price of up to £34 million to finance fresh acquisitions and begin the Ratcliffe era.
Having made a successful comeback to football, Greenwood has scored five goals and provided five assists for Getafe this season. As a result, United needs to decide whether to hold onto Greenwood or let him go given their deficiency in forward depth.
Although Alejandro Garnacho, Marcus Rashford, and Rasmus Hojlund have been playing brilliantly together lately, there aren’t many trustworthy alternatives to relieve their load. The club is open to summertime offers for players like Jadon Sancho and Facundo Pellistri because Antony has fallen short of expectations.
Greenwood is valued at £34 million by United, but it is unclear if any prospective buyers will be willing to pay that amount. Getafe is unable to afford the price tag and his wage demands, even if the club is eager to have him return the following season.
The strongest ties have been to Barcelona, but the La Liga winners are facing financial difficulties of their own, and a new head coach will take over for the team in the upcoming season, so it is unlikely that a big-money move like Greenwood would be approved anytime soon. All the while, the player would prefer to stay at United and turn down offers from other teams.
