Lewis Hamilton’s shocking Ferrari transfer appears to have gone unnoticed by everyone, including his parents.
Lewis Hamilton has disclosed that he just informed his parents on the day of the announcement that he was joining Ferrari.
When Hamilton announced earlier this month that he would be joining Ferrari in 2025, the entire sports world was taken aback.
Hamilton began his Formula One career with McLaren, who were sponsored by the German company, therefore his lengthy relationship with Mercedes would come to an early conclusion.
After that, in 2013, Hamilton made the unexpected decision to switch teams to Mercedes from McLaren. This decision eventually resulted in six championship victories and years of supremacy at Brackley.
Given that the new F1 technical restrictions will be implemented in 2026, his decision to join Ferrari may have been another inspired one.
Speaking on his unexpected transfer to Ferrari, Hamilton discussed the topic on BBC 5 Live’s newest podcast, “F1: Back at Base.”
Hamilton said that “no one knew” before to the revelation, including his father Anthony Hamilton, who has played a significant role in his career.
“I said nothing to anyone. My parents weren’t informed until the day it was made public. So, he said, nobody knew.
“I truly intended to complete it for myself. I had to decide what was best for me in the end.”
Given that Hamilton will be 40 years old when he makes his F1 debut for the team, he will probably complete his career with Ferrari.
He said he followed his “gut feeling” while deciding to join Ferrari.
“I’ve known Fred [Vasseur] for a long time, and it happened very fast,” he remarked. “For me, the start of a new year meant excitement, but I had no idea what the future held or how long I would race. All I knew was that I felt extremely motivated and eager to keep racing.
“I mean, the chance just presented itself, and I thought, Well, I should give it some thought.
“And I had to just follow my instincts because I didn’t have much time to think before I decided to seize the opportunity.”
