Legendary German coach Lothar Matthaus claims that Xabi Alonso is “not interested” in joining Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, or Liverpool this summer and instead wants to stay at Bayer Leverkusen.
Jurgen Klopp revealed last month that he will be leaving Liverpool to take a break from football, therefore the team is searching for a new manager.
In a similar situation, Bayern Munich’s current manager Thomas Tuchel mutually agreed to depart the Allianz Arena in the summer due to the team’s bad run of play.
Alonso, a former midfielder for Bayern Munich and Liverpool, is thought to be the early favorite for both positions following his performances this season with Bayer Leverkusen.
With 11 games left, Alonso has led the German team to the top of the Bundesliga standings, eight points ahead of second-place Bayern Munich.
The legendary German Matthaus believes that Alonso will stay at Leverkusen for the upcoming season, despite reports that Liverpool is now his “clear preference” over Bayern Munich this summer.
“His dream may be to one day coach Bayern, Liverpool, or Real Madrid,” Matthaus stated. But he’s not finished at Leverkusen yet, in my opinion. Xabi has experienced far too many victories as a player to be easily swayed by famous people.
Furthermore, he will not be influenced by the financial side. What counts to him are the things he has created and the people he created them with. He is aware of his origins and his debts to others. I don’t think he will sign with another team for the upcoming season because of this.
“I can’t think of a coach in Europe or the world who fits Bayern Munich better than Xabi Alonso,” Matthaus continued. But I believe it’s a good thing that Alonso is concentrating on Bayer Leverkusen.
“[He] is not yet interested in Real Madrid, Liverpool, or Bayern Munich. In the upcoming two and a half months, he is just focused on capturing three titles with Leverkusen.
“As a coach, he operates exactly like he did as a player. He stays loyal to who he is. He doesn’t care about the stories that are being told right now or in the upcoming days, weeks, or months. He can take things slowly and is not under any strain.
