According to the Daily Star, Liverpool is reportedly interested in signing Anthony Gordon, a star for Newcastle United, this summer.
Following his transfer from Everton to St James’ Park last year, the 23-year-old initially needed some time to get used to his new surroundings. But in 34 Premier League games this season, the forward has had an incredible season, tallying 10 goals and dishing out as many assists.
As to the Daily Star report, Liverpool has been closely monitoring the progress of the former Everton player, and after being impressed by his performances, the Reds have expressed interest in signing him.
According to the report, Newcastle faces the possibility of breaking the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations, which could lead them to sell Gordon and cash in on two of their best players this summer in order to balance their books.
But according to the Daily Star, the Magpies would not allow their star player to go for a low price and will demand a payment of at least £100 million.
Anthony Gordon heading to Liverpool
The 23-year-old has reportedly gone through Everton’s junior system, but he has always been a Liverpool supporter, so should they formally express interest, he may be open to coming to Anfield.
After forcing his way out of the team to join Newcastle last year, the young player has already infuriated the Everton supporters. If he goes with the Toffees’ bitter rivals Liverpool this summer, the Goodison Park faithful will be even more incensed with him.
Gordon would be a huge coup for Liverpool if they were to sign him because he has already shown his abilities in the Premier League. The Merseyside team already has a strong attacking lineup, so unless they choose to take advantage of one of the available choices, they don’t need to spend the rumoured £100 million to recruit another winger.
Liverpool would therefore be better suited keeping the money aside to bolster other squad members this summer. It would be intriguing to see, though, if Anfield decides to take a more serious stance in their pursuit of Gordon during the next transfer window.
