After Peter Gulacsi’s long-term injury and Adam Szalai’s retirement, 22-year-old Szoboszlai was elected captain of his nation in November 2022.
Since then, he has assisted Hungary in topping their qualification group to advance to Euro 2024, where he will face Switzerland, Scotland, and the host nation, Germany, in pool play.
The midfielder’s function is defined by his coach, Rossi, who has observed Szoboszlai’s contributions to the team.
“In my opinion, Dominik is acknowledged as the team’s leader within our group, not just because he is the captain but also because of his abilities and particularly because of his positioning on the field,” the manager said to the media, including Nemzeti Sport.
As we play a more relational style of football than a positional one, Dominik and many other players are free to roam wherever they feel comfortable going.
“He has a lot more freedom to move around the field, which comes with more responsibility, but he can handle this level of responsibility,”
He is free to move wherever on the field and is not limited to playing on the right or left side. And I believe that this is a major benefit for our team.
Szoboszlai has been a box-to-box midfielder for Liverpool this season, primarily on the right. He had to do this by overcoming Mo Salah and going back to assist Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Following his summer transfer from RB Leipzig, the Hungarian made an immediate impression in red. But as the season wore on, he lost interest.
Arne Slot needs to make sure that this won’t be a problem at the beginning of the season, especially since Szoboszlai will be shouldering a lot of responsibility throughout the Euros.
He was injured and missed Euro 2020, therefore he did not qualify for the 2022 World Cup. This summer, he will be looking to make an impression on the international scene.
Szoboszlai would return for preseason in time for Liverpool’s three matches in the US if Hungary were eliminated in the first round.
