Kyle Walker has been named the vice captain of England for the 2024 European Championship.
The 34-year-old is the player in Gareth Southgate’s team with the second-most caps, having led Manchester City to the Premier League title this season.
Walker’s 83 caps are surpassed by only captain Harry Kane’s 91 appearances; it is believed that the England right-back has been selected vice-captain ahead of the Euros.
Southgate has recently spoken highly of Walker’s leadership abilities. Jordan Henderson held the position previously but was not selected for Germany.
“Kyle Walker, for instance, is a great guy in the group both on and off the pitch. He may not be the club captain, but in the last two or three years, I believe he has really grown as a person.
“He has four league championships under his belt, so his confidence stems from his accomplishments as a player,”
“He has a lot of big-match experience having played in both the European and World Cup semifinals with us. However, I do believe that he has grown up.
“His manner and his determination in his work are more important than his vocalisation.”
In the opening Group C match of the European Championship on Sunday in Gelsenkirchen, England takes on Serbia.
