According to the departing Ferrari driver, Carlos Sainz will make his team choice for 2025 “very soon,” there will soon be clarity regarding his Formula One future.
Red Bull has decided to extend Sergio Perez’s contract through the end of 2026, which means that Sainz is no longer involved in the organization.
Additionally, it appears like Mercedes has little interest in filling Lewis Hamilton’s vacated seat, considering Toto Wolff’s emphasis on elevating young talent Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
Although Sainz is supposedly at the top of Audi-Sauber’s shortlist for the upcoming season, it is thought that the Spaniard is reluctant to commit to a project that will probably take years to complete, even in spite of the German manufacturer’s generous offer.
But Williams has lately sprung up as an unexpected suitor for Sainz, and rumors circulated in the Montreal paddock that the three-time Formula One champion was giving serious consideration to the Grove-based company that team owner James Vowles is leading to great things.
While maintaining his composure, Sainz revealed to Spanish station Antena 3 that he will reveal all about his Formula One future “very soon.”
“I want to get it out of the way so I can focus on the rest of the year with Ferrari, so I have my options on the table ready to make a decision and I’m going to make it very soon,” Sainz said.
“There’ll be time to consider the following squad.
“I want to concentrate on that this year because I have a car that can help me win races and place on the podium.”
Vowles openly said in Montreal that Sainz would be better off racing with Williams at the British team, where he would team up with Alex Albon.
The Williams boss stated, “It’s been highlighted that there are one or two options for him and we’re very much one of those two.”
“In my opinion, we’re the best choice—we’re a good match made together, but ultimately, it’s his decision.”
When asked about his future plans in Canada, Sainz gave a hint that he was concentrating on signing a long-term contract with a team and that he saw the impending F1 regulation changes as a good opportunity to make a switch.
He declared, “I sincerely believe that in order to succeed in Formula 1, you need a medium- to long-term project.”
“I don’t think you can succeed in life if all you do is travel for a year and then return.
2025, 2026, 2027, and 2028 are favorable years, don’t they? It’ll be a lottery in 2026. The regulations are now clear to us. Who will be the best at managing them is impossible to predict.
It’s possible that in 2025 and 2026 you won’t be able to compete. However, things will be completely different in 2026. That can also come as a welcome surprise.
