According to a source, Joe Gomez has decided to remain at Liverpool following fruitful discussions with incoming head coach Arne Slot.
In recent weeks, as the Reds’ new era under Slot and sporting director Richard Hughes begins to take form, the defender has been linked to a move away from Anfield.
Gomez was reportedly coveted by Newcastle United in a partial trade that would have sent Anthony Gordon to Liverpool, according to earlier reports. In exchange for Gomez, Liverpool would have had to pay £45 million, but the transfer would have saved Newcastle £75 million in PSR concerns.
Newcastle canceled the Gordon-Gomez trade after their PSR concerns were allayed with the sales of Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson.
In the weeks that followed, other rumors surfaced, saying that Gomez was contemplating leaving Merseyside and was not thrilled about being used as a makeweight to obtain Gordon.
However, Gomez is ‘dedicated’ to the new Liverpool initiative, according to The Times, and will remain with the team once the transfer market closes.
Gomez was a member of the England team that advanced to the Euro 2024 final. He has now returned to Liverpool to train for the preseason. Rather than joining the rest of the team on their preseason tour of the USA, he returned to their AXA Training Centre to rejoin a select group of players, including Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Before the new season begins, Liverpool has two more friendly to play. On Sunday, they will play Las Palmas and Sevilla in back-to-back matches at Anfield in La Liga.
August 17th will mark Slot’s competitive debut as Liverpool’s manager as he travels to newly promoted Ipswich Town.
