After his heartfelt victory over Carlos Alcaraz on Sunday, Novak Djokovic has pledged to compete for additional Olympic gold in 2028. In an exciting match at Roland Garros, the 37-year-old defeated the Spaniard 7-6 (3), 7-6 (2) to finally win the one major trophy that had escaped him throughout his remarkable career.
Following Rafael Nadal, Andre Agassi, Serena Williams, and Steffi Graf as the only four players to win all four Grand Slams and an Olympic singles gold, Djokovic’s victory made him the fifth player to accomplish this feat.
After saying earlier this summer that winning in Paris was his primary objective for 2024, the Serbian was moved to tears.
However, he has recently refuted the idea that the competition marked his final Games appearance. By the time the next edition takes place in Los Angeles, the 24-time Grand Slam winner will be 41 years old, and he is already aiming for a spot on his nation’s squad for the United States.
After defeating Alcaraz, he declared, “I still want to play in Los Angeles.” “I enjoy playing for my country and the Olympic Games particularly and Davis Cup, being part of the team.”
Djokovic added that one of his biggest accomplishments was taking home the coveted gold medal. “I can say that this is probably the biggest sporting success I have ever had at the age of 37, facing a 21-year-old who is probably the best player in the world right now, winning Roland Garros and Wimbledon back-to-back,” he continued.
The tennis legend has received a ton of accolades after his victory. After watching the championship game, Serbian football player Dusan Vlahovic praised his countryman’s accomplishment, stating that it solidified his place as the game’s greatest player ever.
“What a fantastic thing, I’m so happy that I was a part of history and I’m happy for Novak,” the forward for Juventus exclaimed. “I appreciate him for bringing this gold to Serbia and I wish him the best of luck.
He is the best athlete we have ever had and among the best athletes of all time. He won what he missed, and I’m glad I was a part of history. But like I’ve said previously, let’s declare him the official greatest of all time.
Djokovic had surgery only in June to repair a damaged meniscus, and he recovered in time to play in the French Open. Furthermore, he had a second knee injury in the opening rounds, casting doubt on his ability to compete in Paris.
However, he showed no signs of weakness as he exacted revenge on Alcaraz for losing the Wimbledon final. In addition, he has expressed his goal to win the US Open the following month to surpass joint record holder Margaret Court and achieve a historic 25th Slam championship.
