According to Fernando Alonso, if an agreement with Aston Martin is reached, working with Adrian Newey would be “an honour.”
Aston Martin is currently the front-runner to sign Newey, who is expected to depart Red Bull in the first quarter of 2025. PlanetF1.com understands that Newey’s next move will be revealed this week.
Adrian Newey would be “an honour” to work with, according to Fernando Alonso.
Although the two-time World Champion had never before collaborated with the most successful designer in the sport, last week’s delivery of his own Aston Martin Valkyrie, created by Newey, marked the closest the two had come to doing so.
The renowned Formula 1 designer’s future has been a major talking point this season, and Alonso has been positive when asked if joining Aston Martin would be his next step.
“Look, it would be an honour for me to work with Newey because he is the best in history if he ever signs for Aston Martin,” Alonso said to Spanish network DAZN.
What does Adrian Newey do as he is ready to leave Red Bull?
“It would be amazing to work with him; he is a genius in this sport. However, if the time doesn’t arrive, that’s okay; if it does, and it just happens to align with six months or a year of my job, that’s great for me.
“And we’ll see. When I have to decide whether or not to keep racing, it depends on a lot of factors and the current situation that I’m not sure about, and I would rather not think about it.”
Respect is reciprocated between Alonso and Newey, as the chief technology officer of Red Bull acknowledged in a previous interview that he had intended to collaborate with the Spanish driver in the past.
In 2023, Newey responded to a question from the BBC about drivers he had not worked with and with whom he would have loved a collaboration, saying, “In terms of drivers, Fernando is one I have always…
Subsequently, it was brought to light that a potential transfer for Alonso was on the verge of happening towards the close of 2013, coinciding with Mark Webber’s impending retirement from Formula 1. In response, Newey expressed sadness that the deal never went through, citing his deep regard for Fernando.
The fact is that I make a conscious effort to live in the now and the future rather than the past. Remorse? No. I simply feel fortunate to have had the opportunity I have, to have met and collaborated with the individuals I have.
