A fresh foot injury has kept British tennis player Emma Raducanu out of a thrilling match at the China Open, and she has admitted that she needs “time to heal.”
When she was forced to retire injured from her Korea Open quarterfinal on Saturday, the 21-year-old was in excellent form and about to break back into the world’s top 50.
Raducanu had to work quickly to prepare for the penultimate WTA 1000 event of 2024, the China Open, which gets underway in Beijing on Wednesday.
After a first-round match against a qualifier, she was expected to square off against Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen, the seventh-ranked player in the world.
She had to withdraw from the China Open, though, due to a sprained ligament in her foot. She will now concentrate on healing so that she may play again “as soon as she can.”
Raducanu wrote on her official X account, “Last week in Seoul, I sprained some ligaments in my foot, which unfortunately need some more time to heal.”
As a result, I am unable to compete in Beijing, but I intend to return as soon as I can.
After persistent physical issues in 2023 and 2022, Raducanu—who made his debut in the tennis world in 2021 by winning the US Open—has had a remarkable comeback in 2024.
This year, she has remarkably defeated two players ranked in the top ten in the world—at the Eastbourne International and Wimbledon, respectively.
This season, Raducanu has advanced to five WTA quarterfinals, demonstrating her talent and capacity to compete against the greatest players many times.
The British model, who placed among the top 10 in the world in 2022, recently acknowledged that she has been “nursing a few niggles.”
The next performance by Raducanu is set for October 7 in Wuhan, China; however, it is unclear if she will be well enough to play then.
