The news Eddie Howe gave before the match against Brighton & Hove Albion was not entirely positive.
Callum Wilson is still out, but Alexander Isak is ready to play again this weekend against Brighton & Hove Albion.
However, because of a hamstring injury he suffered in the 0-0 draw with Everton, former England right-back Kieran Trippier will not play against the Seagulls at St. James’ Park. Howe said that Isak’s toe injury has “healed” by now, and Wilson might need additional time, but he is still in the running for the weekend.
“Alex has trained well and trained well,” Howe stated during his pre-game press conference before the home encounter against Brighton & Hove Albion. He began this week and has since shown progress, so he is currently in the running.
“Callum has trained, but we will keep evaluating him daily. Making the correct decision is crucial because we want to retain him for as long as possible after we get him back.”
Tino Livramento, who was not utilized during the international break and is now eager to play in the Premier League again, will be able to take Trippier’s place. Regarding Trippier’s issue, Howe stated: “Kieran has developed a hamstring issue. He will be gone for a few weeks, but it’s probably nothing too serious.”
Miguel Almiron was the final player to go after serving for Paraguay, but the Newcastle head coach will evaluate his other possibilities as well as the returning international players. Howe stated: “Miguel Almiron is the only player we haven’t yet seen. We hope to see him this morning because he was flying yesterday. Everyone else is doing well and has returned in good health.
Academy product Lewis Miley, who returned to training after missing more than 200 days due to a foot ailment, is another returning star. Miley is making a comeback to the top level after breaking his foot in an off-season incident.
“He has resumed training during the break,” Howe stated. It appears like he hasn’t been away because he has looked great. Seeing it has been wonderful. He will have some competition when we reintroduce him, and he is returning to a wonderful setting.”
With their most recent loss coming against Man City in January, when Oscar Bobb scored a late winner, Newcastle enters the match against Brighton hoping to preserve a 12-game home record.
