The French league announced Friday that the appeals board has upheld the ruling requiring Paris Saint-Germain, the league’s winner, to reimburse Kylian Mbappe for unpaid salaries totalling 55 million euros (£42 million).
Last month, the LFP’s legal commission found in Mbappe’s favour; however, PSG appealed, claiming it owed him no money. On October 15, the two parties were heard once more, and the decision was the same.
The LFP emailed The Associated Press to say, “The club (PSG) must pay him the parts of his salary he is claiming.”
“The French Soccer Federation’s executive committee may hear an appeal of this decision, but it is not subject to any further appeals.”
In his conflict with PSG, Mbappe had earlier turned down the commission’s offer of mediation, claiming that the team owed him three months’ pay and the final third of a loyalty incentive.
He scored a club-record 256 goals in seven years for PSG before joining Real Madrid on a free transfer this summer.
When Mbappé was sidelined before the 2023–24 season after he decided not to renew his contract PSG claimed that there was a verbal agreement whereby the player agreed to forfeit bonuses to rejoin the squad.
Deep conflicts caused Mbappe’s relationship with PSG to dissolve, and during his final home game at Parc des Princes, several fans jeered him.
Before Saturday’s showdown against bitter rival Barcelona, the France star has eight goals in 13 games for Real Madrid.
When Mbappe signed a new deal in 2022, PSG was disappointed because they had offered him the most lucrative contract in the club’s history.
However, Mbappe thought that commitments to sign important players were broken, which infuriated him. He was paraded in front of supporters while brandishing a 2025 shirt when he signed the contract. According to reports, Mbappe was irritated by the contract’s expiration date of 2024, which included a player’s option for an additional season.
In June of last year, Mbappe shocked PSG by telling them he would not exercise the option for another year. PSG was forced to sell Mbappe since his contract was practically in its last year and they didn’t want to lose him for free when it ended.
Amid a heated transfer dispute in the summer of 2023, his PSG career might have come to an end. Mbappe was forced to practice with periphery players when he informed the club that he would not be extending, and he was excluded from a preseason visit to South Korea and Japan. He turned down a 300 million euro move to Saudi team Al-Hilal, despite PSG’s declaration that it would prefer to sell him rather than allow him to depart for free in 2024.
Mbappe was pulled out of PSG’s first league game of the season, but after discussions, he quickly made a comeback.
