Galatasaray’s third goal of the evening came after the center-back pair made a mistake, allowing Mauro Icardi to enter the penalty area for the home team and lift the ball over Andre Onana.
In addition to calling the pair’s contribution “soft and weak,” Scholes acknowledged that Varane’s performance has him worried, saying the Frenchman “looks a little bit sluggish.”
“This was United’s first home Champions League game, and you really had to win. This is a bad outcome, Scholes said on Tuesday night to TNT Sports.
Despite not being a left-back, “[Sofyan] Amrabat gets the job done for the goal. It was really open.
“I’m unsure of Varane’s destination. In the center of the field, Lindelof is lost. So fragile and frail. They lost opportunities because they were so transparent in that key defensive area.
“I do fret a little bit about Varane. As Rio [Ferdinand] was at Real Madrid, I know he has been one of the best defenders in the world, but I simply feel like his legs are acting a little slow. He’s a little out of shape, and I’d be really concerned for him.
When healthy, Varane will start for Man United, but Lindelof is only getting a chance to play because of Lisandro Martinez’s absence.
Martinez, who underwent a second foot surgery this year, will be absent for the next two to three months, but Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans are other options for the middle of the defense.
Rasmus Hojlund, a player for Denmark, scored twice while putting in a standout effort in the final third of the field, and Scholes was all praise for him.
The former midfielder said, “When United loses a game like this, you’re generally pretty unhappy, but I think I saw enough in the team tonight that really excited me.
“Hojlund in particular scored two goals in fantastic fashion. His second goal, in particular, was fantastic. He gave the center back no chance while wearing tidy heels.
