It has been speculated that Mason Greenwood may be able to return to Manchester United after his season-long loan to Getafe is over. Greenwood’s absence from United has not yet been officially declared, allowing room for a possible comeback in the summer of 2019.
Richard Arnold, the chief executive officer of United, revealed in August that Greenwood had reached a mutual decision to continue his career outside of Old Trafford this year.
The 22-year-old forward was placed on paid administrative leave in January 2022 after being detained and later charged with attempted rape, using coercive or controlling behavior, and assault causing actual bodily damage.
Prior to the charges being dropped in February of this year, Greenwood vehemently rejected all of the allegations, which prompted United to open an internal investigation to determine his future.
Arnold reportedly told club officials that he intended to reintegrate Greenwood into Erik ten Hag’s team but then abruptly changed his mind after receiving a barrage of negative internet feedback from supporters, commentators, and domestic violence charities, according to The Athletic.
Arnold clarified that it was merely one of numerous alternatives the club examined in his formal statement. He stated nonetheless that United were confident that Greenwood was clear of the accusations that were withdrawn.
According to Jackson of The Guardian, there does seem to be a path for Greenwood to return to Old Trafford, even though it is improbable at this point given the already-teased uproar.
When United’s preseason tour stopped in Las Vegas at the beginning of August, Jamie Jackson of The Guardian told Stretford Paddock that he had heard of a declaration on Greenwood’s intended return.
Greenwood wasn’t anticipated to play for United again, according to the club’s official announcement at the time. Jackson claims that if that had been decided, the team would have made it obvious that he had no future at Old Trafford.
Intriguingly, Jackson stated that prior to his arrest in January 2022, United officials had told him that Greenwood was the team’s top player.
Additionally, he confirmed rumors that the football department of United’s operations, including manager Erik ten Hag and football director John Murtough, wanted him back as soon as the accusations were withdrawn.
Despite the figures, his status as a native talent, and his elite potential, Greenwood’s return to United seems unlikely.
Early in his Getafe career, the former Red Devils No. 11 hasn’t demonstrated anything that suggests he can rapidly regain his electrifying pre-suspension form.
But by the time next summer rolls around, things might have quickly changed, providing United’s management with a significant choice to make before his contract expires in 2025.
