Seamus Coleman will play in Everton’s final season at Goodison Park
The well-liked 35-year-old defender, who cost £60,000 to go from Sligo Rovers to Merseyside in January 2009, has pledged to staying in Sean Dyche’s team through 2024–2025 in order to continue his devoted and excellent work in royal blue.
With 364 Premier League appearances, Coleman holds the record for most appearances by Everton. The Irishman is ranked 13th all-time in the Club’s history with 422 games played in all competitions, 11 spots behind Dixie Dean and Leon Osman who are tied for 10th place.
After being named Everton’s captain in 2019, the right-back has led the Toffees 133 times (just 10 players have led the Blues more frequently). He has received praise from the football community for his love for his club and his country as well as his leadership abilities.
Coleman made his debut on the international scene in 2011 and has since earned 72 caps for the Republic of Ireland.
The team’s affection for Everton and willingness to support the team in its final season at Goodison before the Club moves to a state-of-the-art new waterfront stadium for the start of 2025–2026 proved to be important factors in the player’s decision, he acknowledged after agreeing to a new one-year contract.
“I’m extremely proud and honoured to sign a new contract and to keep playing for this special club in the best league in the world,” Coleman said to evertontv. “Everyone knows what Everton means to me.”
I’m delighted to be staying on for a longer period of time since I give the Football Club my all. I’m going to treasure and savour each second.
“It’s difficult to accept that this will be our final season at Goodison—a really precious site for all Evertons, including myself. Naturally, I would like to take part in that.
“I still think I can contribute to this football team both on and off the pitch. Although it’s good to start the season at Goodison, if I didn’t think I could make a difference for the team, I wouldn’t have accepted the contract.
I’ve only participated in two national team games. I want to support the guys on the pitch because I feel terrific. What better place to continue enjoying it than at the club you love?
“I believe that last season, the manager really stabilised that ship with our performances. All I want is to stay with this football team and be a part of that.
In October 2009, Coleman made his Everton debut against Benfica in the Europa League. After a brief loan, he helped lead Blackpool into the Premier League before scoring his first goal for the Blues against Brentford in September 2010.
Coleman became one of the best right-backs in the Premier League after agreeing to a new five-and-a-half-year contract in December 2012. His all-action performances, unwavering devotion, and enthusiasm for Everton won him over many Everton supporters.
“I feel like a little bit of the old Everton has returned with the old-school principles and the demands on each other,” he continued. “I’ve said this a few times.”
“As a result, you saw the progress we achieved last season. The manager deserves a great deal of credit for it.
“This squad has become much closer as a result of the trials they have encountered. I appreciated being a part of it, and we can definitely use it to go ahead as we enter the new season.
I will never cease explaining to them the significance that this football team holds for the community.
“I’m catching up to some of the greatest Everton players, and if I can crack the top-10 player appearances, that’s fantastic company to be in.” For someone who originally only wanted to come over here and make an appearance in the first team, it will be a gratifying accomplishment!
“I just want to give it my all for Everton once more and join up with the squad.”
