Anthony Gordon and Marc Guehi have both been linked with moves to Liverpool this summer
There are several names in England’s Euro 2024 roster that Liverpool has previously been associated with.
The most obvious is perhaps Jude Bellingham, who the Reds had been pursuing for a while but abandoned their pursuit of the then-Borussia Dortmund star in April 2023 after learning it would not be possible. Conor Gallagher was first on the team’s wish list of possible midfield targets last year, following just such a decision.
After his breakout 2019–20 season with Arsenal, Bukayo Saka was frequently linked to Liverpool, however at the end of that season, he inked a new long-term deal. When Mohamed Salah’s future appeared bleak, Jarrod Bowen was frequently mentioned as a potential Mohamed Salah substitute; however, at 27 years old, the speculation has since subsided.
Lately, rumors involving Ollie Watkins have been dispelled, and the Reds have also been tangentially connected to players like Adam Wharton and Eberechi Eze of Crystal Palace. However, the most persistent rumor is about their Eagles teammate Marc Guehi and Anthony Gordon, a winger for Newcastle United.
Due to Joel Matip’s departure after his contract, Liverpool is looking for a new center-back this summer. Guehi is one of several defenders who are still being linked to a transfer to Anfield as a result. The Eagles, who have an expiring contract in 2026, are preparing for offers because they may find it difficult to keep him after Euro 2024.
Gordon, who played for Everton in the past, has never concealed his loyalty to the Reds despite being a lifelong Liverpool fan. Having been linked to Anfield earlier this summer, this has only served to heighten rumors that he may one day sell Newcastle United for the team.
Although the long-term prospects of Reds trio Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz, and Salah are uncertain, a move for Gordon seems improbable right now.
And in talking about rumors surrounding his England teammate Guehi, who is also connected to Liverpool, the 23-year-old may have hinted subtly that he plans to remain at Newcastle United for the upcoming campaign.
“I’m not sure if I’ve seen the Newcastle connections, but I’d love for him to come because he’s a great player and he would improve our team,” he said to talkSPORT.
“He’s amazing, he plays such a great game, and I’m happy that the country got to see him perform because he’s a nice guy who deserves everything that comes his way.”
Although such remarks may imply that Guehi may depart this summer, they also seem to suggest that Gordon is thinking about his future—at least temporarily—at St. James’ Park.
Before the Newcastle winger joined the Palace center-back in the senior squad upon receiving his first call-up by Gareth Southgate back in March, Gordon and Guehi were teammates on the England Under-21 team for a brief period.
Only time will tell if Gordon’s ambition comes true and they end up playing together at the club level, whether it’s at Newcastle, Liverpool, or another team in the future. They are now both representing their countries in the European Championships.
