Pep Guardiola’s Man City contract expires in 2025.
Following his resignation on Tuesday, Pep Guardiola is expected to take over as manager of England, replacing the 53-year-old Southgate.
Guardiola’s contract with City expires at the end of the following season, and he has already stated that he would like to play international football beyond that time.
With five Premier League championships, four Carabao Cups, two FA Cups, two Community Shields, one Champions League, one Super Cup, and one Club World Cup, Guardiola has had an extraordinarily successful time leading the Premier League team.
He hasn’t ruled out staying longer at the Etihad, but he was candid about his goals back in February of this year.
“A team from throughout the country. To prepare for a World Cup or a European Championship, I would like to coach a national squad. That seems good to me,” he said to ESPN Brazil.
“I have no idea who would want me! Like a club, a national team must want you to work for them.
When asked why he wanted to lead an international team, Guardiola said he had never personally set out to win a major continental event or the World Cup.
He is a valuable member of any national team.
“I never considered it in that way [won a world cup],” he continued.
“I never gave winning a league championship or the Champions League any thought when I first started doing this. No. I wondered if I had a job. Alright.
“I want to experience what it’s like to be in a World Cup, a Euro, a Copa América, or anything similar. That’s what I would like to have.
“I would like to have the experience of managing in a World Cup, but I’m not sure when that would be—five, ten, or fifteen years from now.”
Guardiola has previously been connected to both Spain and the US, but the England position might be the ideal fit for him.
He would have a year to work with a national team prior to the 2026 World Cup, which is held in the US, Mexico, and Canada, if he were to assume the helm after his City contract expired.
For a year, England would be without a manager, but it would be worth it to have a mastermind like Guardiola.
Lee Carsley, the manager of England Under-21, may take over the position for a year till Guardiola departs City in the summer.
