The choice made by Red Bull to keep Sergio Perez after the Formula One summer break has been referred to as “the least disruptive thing to do.”
Weeks of suspense came to an end on Monday night when Red Bull informed Crash.net that Perez would continue to drive for the company after the shutdown.
During Perez’s terrible run of form, Red Bull CEO Christian Horner met with Helmut Marko to talk about his future.
With just 28 points earned in the last eight races, Perez threatens Red Bull’s lead in the constructors’ title.
Red Bull has, nevertheless, offered Perez another vote of confidence as he attempts to salvage his campaign.
Reporter Craig Slater of Sky Sports News provided his view of the scenario and the reasoning for maintaining Perez.
“There has been a lot of conjecture that Red Bull will bring in young Kiwi driver Liam Lawson or perhaps current RB team driver Daniel Ricciardo to replace Sergio Perez,” Slater stated.
“Christian Horner and the team’s specialized adviser, Helmut Marko, met today at Red Bull headquarters. It was to talk about Sergio Perez’s prospects. Marko voiced his opinion on this, and judging from his criticism of Perez’s Belgian performance, it was assumed he would be pushing for Perez’s replacement.
However, that hasn’t occurred. In the end, Horner has decided that Perez would stay with Max Verstappen after the summer break.
“It was a decision because, in the end, Red Bull is the one who pays the money and receives the bonuses, and even though Verstappen is leading the driver standings comfortably, McLaren is catching up to them in the Constructors’ Championship.”
“What has hurt them there is Perez’s unequal point contribution in comparison to Verstappen’s. Horner has the final say on the matter and has determined that continuing with Perez will cause the least amount of disruption. He anticipates progress during the summer break.”
When Formula One returns for the Dutch Grand Prix at the end of August, McLaren will lead Red Bull by just 42 points in the constructors’ title.
