A final matchup with Daniil Medvedev is now possible thanks to Jannik Sinner’s comeback victory over the world No. 1 after falling behind a set.
Having defeated world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner has advanced to the Miami Open final.
Sinner, who had narrowly lost the first set to Alcaraz, came back to defeat the Spanish 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-2 to even the Head2Head matchup at 3-3 and deprive him of the top spot.
Sinner acknowledged that the victory “means a lot” as he enters his second ATP Masters 1000 final after falling to the Alcaraz just a few weeks prior in the Indian Wells semifinals.
That is significant. Again, we both played tennis at a very, very high level. I simply did my best “After the altercation, Sinner remarked.
“I attempted to push him thereafter observing him struggle for a few games in the third set. I’m delighted that today’s aggressive tennis match went my way despite our best efforts to play it both ways.
Despite Sinner having a 4-2 advantage in the first set, Alcaraz rallied to force a tiebreak and win five consecutive points to grab the lead.
Sinner’s chances of winning his first Masters 1000 championship appeared to be over when Alcaraz led 4-3 in the second set and had two break points. The Italian, however, roared back to force a decision.
Sinner set the tone for the rest of the match with an early break at the beginning of the third set while his opponent was experiencing leg cramps. Sinner promptly finished out the match to secure his spot in the final, where Daniil Medvedev awaits.
Medvedev presently leads the Head2Head series 5-0; Sinner has yet to defeat the former world No. 1, and their most recent encounter took place in the Rotterdam final in February.
Sinner, however, is optimistic about his chances since he ‘feels good’ on the court and because the environment is different in Miami.
Different circumstances from Rotterdam. Sinner exclaimed, “I’m thrilled to be able to compete against him once more.
“I lost the last one, but I’ll give it my best effort and try to make some positive improvements, as I did today against Carlos, and we’ll see.
I am at ease on this court. I have some wonderful memories, and I hope I can play well.
