Erling Haaland won the Football Writers’ Association Player of the Year award thanks to an outstanding debut season for Manchester City.
In just 47 games, Haaland has tallied 51 goals and eight assists for a goal or an assist per 60 minutes. With 35 goals and counting, he recently broke the record for the most goals scored in a single Premier League season. He also holds several other milestones for City, including the most goals scored in a single season.
Haaland has six games left in the season, or seven if City advances to the Champions League final, and he has the opportunity to break yet another amazing top-flight scoring record. However, he still needs 12 goals to tie Dixie Dean’s all-time record.
After teammates Ruben Dias, Jurgen Klinsmann, and Gianfranco Zola, Haaland becomes just the fourth player to win the prize in his first season in the Premier League. Following Haaland and the Arsenal duo of Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard, Kevin De Bruyne finished fourth in the 2023 election.
It is an honor for me to receive the Football Writers’ Award in my first year of English football, the striker stated. I work hard to be the greatest version of myself every day, so it means a lot to me to be recognized in this way.
“I have enjoyed my time at City so far; my teammates are amazing and provide me opportunities to score goals. In order to win this award, I must thank each and every one of them.
“I owe Pep and the organization that supports City’s team so much, too. I have never worked with such top-notch professionals, and everyone has been so kind to me since I started.
I want to thank everyone who supported me by voting. Receiving this honor is quite humbling. I am now concentrating on making sure I have a strong season’s end and aiding City in winning trophies.
