Harry Maguire has been informed by Rio Ferdinand yet again that he needs to leave Manchester United this summer in order to jumpstart his career.
After struggling in the first few days of Erik ten Hag’s premiership, Maguire, 30, has spent the majority of the 2022–23 season on the bench. In his absence, Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane have formed a strong partnership, but this season, Ten Hag has also started Luke Shaw, a left-back by trade, in front of Maguire on occasion, highlighting just how drastically the England international’s stock has fallen at Old Trafford.
With regard to Maguire’s long-term prospects, Ferdinand, who worked for Manchester United for more than ten years, has been particularly outspoken. And Ferdinand, who has argued that Maguire should leave the club in January, has reiterated that position.
When asked if Maguire should look for a new team during the summer transfer window, Ferdinand responded, “I think he needs to,” in a video posted to his FIVE YouTube account. Going in the summer is necessary for him to revive his career. He cannot continue to take the back seat. If he actually wants to remain an England player and turn things around.
Maguire is reportedly determined to stay and compete for a spot at Old Trafford, despite expectations that Ten Hag would supervise a merciless revamp of his squad this summer.
Although this week’s news that Napoli defender Kim-Min Jae has ‘accepted’ to join the Red Devils after months of rumours linking him with a move to the Premier League may have taken the decision out of his hands.
Kim only went to Naples this summer, but since making an impression for South Korea at the World Cup, he has drawn interest from other elite European clubs. There is reportedly a €50 million (£43 million) release clause in his contract.
This week, FootMercato reported that United had made a “colossal” contract offer to Kim’s management after deciding that the center-back was their main defensive target.
Kim’s Napoli colleague Victor Osimhen is a candidate for Manchester United, who is also looking for a top No. 9. Harry Kane, the star player for Tottenham, is reportedly Ten Hag’s top aim. However, it is unclear whether Spurs owner Daniel Levy would actually help make a move happen, despite the fact that Kane has just 12 months left on his present contract and may go for free next year.
Under manager Luciano Spalletti, Kim and Osimhen each had a significant impact on Napoli’s unexpected Scudetto victory this year. However, there is a consensus around the club that both players might still be sold this summer if there is enough demand for their services.
