Thomas Tuchel’s decision to abandon his pursuit of a deal to bring Edson Alvarez to Bayern Munich gives Chelsea some momentum.
According to a report from AS in Spain, Chelsea is still interested in signing the Mexican international this summer after coming close to doing so in September.
The Ajax No. 4 was rumoured to be up for grabs, with Bayern Munich presenting Mauricio Pochettino with competition.
Chelsea’s efforts to sign Edson Alvarez have now received a boost, though.
What is the narrative?
Florian Plettenburg reports that Bayern Munich will not be in the running to sign Alvarez, who is valued around €50 million (£43 million), as Tuchel has other ideas for bolstering his central midfield unit.
The German team, a clear European powerhouse, might have given the 25-year-old the opportunity to play in the Champions League next year, something Chelsea cannot do.
Because of this, many people thought Tuchel had a better chance than Pochettino to acquire Alvarez. However, if Plettenburg of Sky Sports Germany is to be believed, a significant rival for his signature has since withdrawn.
Edson Alvarez would be brought to Chelsea, as Todd Boehly had promised.
It’s interesting to note that Todd Boehly promised to pursue Alvarez again once his relocation to west London fell through in 2022.
Chelsea have been bouncing from target to target to target, CBS Sports’ Ben Jacobs told The Football Terrace. Don’t forget that Todd Boehly promised Edson Alvarez they would get him later. Ajax hasn’t returned despite their desire to avoid selling in the middle of the season.
Although Chelsea made no further offers in January, it’s possible that Boehly was merely respecting Ajax’s decision to not sell in the middle of the current campaign by implying that interest might be revived this summer.
The Mexican player even informed De Telegraaf that he was disappointed to lose out on a move to Chelsea, showing that Alvarez himself is very interested in the change.
The master of Ajax remarked: “I grieved for one day before proving that I am a strong guy. Of course, the disappointment persisted for a long, but everything happens for a reason, in my opinion. Perhaps the moment wasn’t right yet.
Keep an eye on the issue since Alvarez’s Chelsea transfer may eventually happen this summer.
