Former Liverpool FC defender Glen Johnson recently expressed his opinion that the team shouldn’t be fully disqualified from the race to recruit Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, which represents an intriguing turn in the club’s summer transfer intentions.
Although Newcastle play in the UEFA Champions League this season and the Reds do not, Johnson argues that Liverpool’s return to the Champions League sooner rather than later could revive their chase of the gifted midfielder. What he said to Betfred over ECHO is as follows:
“If you’re playing for Newcastle United in the Champions League, then that’s a bit difficult to give up. I don’t know whether he sees himself at Newcastle in the long-term, but any time that a club like Liverpool comes in for you, then it’s always going to grab your attention.
“However, in regards to a move this summer, all the best players want to play in the Champions League so he may want to stay at Newcastle United for that reason. I still believe that Liverpool will have a sniff because it’s Liverpool after all and they’re going to be back in the Champions League themselves sooner rather than later.”
It is no secret that Bruno Guimaraes, 25, caught the attention of Liverpool while playing for Lyon. Due to his crucial contribution in helping Newcastle qualify for the Champions League the following season, a potential transfer seemed doubtful.
It seems unlikely that Guimaraes would look for a new opportunity at this pivotal time in his career as he gets ready to compete in Europe’s top competition. However, Johnson asserts that Guimaraes might find the pull of Anfield irresistible once Liverpool reclaims its place in the Champions League.
To the Reds for Guimaraes?
Football players have an undeniable affinity for the Champions League, and Guimaraes is probably no different. Johnson’s claim that Liverpool is a desirable location has merit, though, given their rich history and promising future.
Liverpool’s attractiveness could be a deciding factor for Guimaraes when the time comes, with their legendary European past and a squad poised to return to the summit of European football.
Fans of Liverpool are particularly excited about the possibility of reinforcing their midfield with the addition of a player like Guimaraes, as they eagerly await the club’s return to the Champions League.
Although a transfer this summer seems doubtful, Liverpool’s long-term pursuit of the Brazilian maestro is strongly supported by their conviction that they will once again contend among Europe’s elite.
