Man City could now land their next David Silva by securing transfer deal for ‘amazing’ £34m player – opinion
Securing a transfer for Gabri Veiga this summer might lead Manchester City to the next David Silva.
After 10 years of service, in which he made 436 appearances, registered 77 goals, 140 assists, and claimed four Premier League championships, Silva left City in 2020 to join Real Sociedad and make a comeback to Spain.
The Manchester club may now have the chance to bring a fresh take on the 37-year-old midfielder to the Etihad Stadium after three years without him.
Veiga might be City’s replacement for Silva.
The midfielder is now under contract with Celta Vigo through the year 2026, and last week it was rumored that Manchester City had joined Chelsea and Liverpool in the competition to recruit him.
The 21-year-old’s contract reportedly contains a €40 million (£34 million) release clause, according to reports.
Veiga, who came up through Celta’s development programme much like Silva did at Valencia before joining City in 2010 for a cost of £24 million at the age of 24, had previously made 55 professional appearances for his current team.
The midfielder has made 55 appearances and has registered 11 goals and 4 assists, all of which came during his previous La Liga season.
This implies that he has already demonstrated the potential to contribute to goals from midfield, much like Silva did for Manchester United throughout his ten-year tenure.
In fact, talent scout Jacek Kulig referred to one of his La Liga performances from last season, in which he scored two goals and provided one assist against Real Valladolid, as “amazing” on Twitter.
Pep Guardiola might need a midfielder who can contribute goals and assists throughout the season after also losing Ilkay Gundogan this summer. For this reason, we believe that triggering Veiga’s release clause and having him follow in Silva’s footsteps could be a wise move on the part of the team.
