Levi Colwill of Brighton is one of the top young centre backs currently on the scene. The English player, whose popularity has soared since last season, recently helped England win the U21 EURO. Several elite Premier League clubs are interested in Colwill.
The 20-year-old was a pillar of the Brighton defensive under Roberto De Zerbi during his loan season at Brighton and Hove Albion last year. One of the most promising players to come out of the academy is Colwill. Colwill was loaned to Huddersfield by CFC in 2021, and his contribution to Huddersfield’s third-place finish in the second division was significant.
Colwill’s development would have been hampered by the additions of Kalidou Koulibaly and Wesley Fofana last season, so the Blues chose to loan him out again to a team where he could play frequently and develop into a superb young centre back. He flourished at Brighton under De Zerbi’s possession-based, yet fluid system.
So much so that the Seagulls attempted to make a £30 million offer earlier this summer, but the Blues turned them down. Colwill, 20, is reportedly a major favorite of Mauricio Pochettino, who wants to keep the player at Stamford Bridge.
Trevoh Chalobah’s likely departure and Koulibaly’s departure free up spots in the first team for Colwill. The England U21 international will have many opportunities to play at Stamford Bridge, even though he may not be the first choice.
The Evening Standard claims that Chelsea turned down Brighton’s highest offer from Colwill of £40 million. The South Coast side has given up on Colwill and is looking at cheaper options to strengthen their defence. Manchester City, on the other hand, appears interested in Colwill.
Manchester City have won four Premier League championships in five years. They have no intention of giving up their multifaceted quest for trophies as they continue to add elite talent to their roster. The Premier League champions are still interested in signing RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol. However, if a deal cannot be reached, Man City will focus on Chelsea’s Colwill.
Colwill has also drawn interest from Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, but Chelsea have made it clear that the player is not for sale. As he deploys homegrown players, Pochettino wants to rely on the Englishman.
