Danny Murphy, a former Liverpool player, has advised Kalvin Phillips to think about his future at Manchester City despite the midfielder’s repeated desire to remain with the treble-winning team.
Phillips wants to stay at the Etihad Stadium despite Pep Guardiola using him infrequently after his expensive transfer from Elland Road last summer.
One of the teams reportedly keeping tabs on Phillips’ status is Newcastle United, and while a permanent transfer at this point seems improbable, there does seem to be some hope that a loan deal may be completed.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Murphy claims that talk of a comparable circumstance involving Phillips and Jack Grealish is unrealistic and acknowledges that, had he been in a similar situation, he would have been considering moving on.
When questioned if there were any similarities between Phillips and Jack Grealish, Murphy responded, “It’s not comparable.” because Jack Grealish used his football experience to learn on the job.
“He was still out there learning, even if his first season wasn’t as fruitful and lucrative as his second. On the practice pitch, you don’t learn nearly as much as you do on the football pitch. I’m only now telling you that. Who you train with or who coaches you doesn’t matter.
“If I were him, I’d have to admit that it hasn’t worked and be realistic about it. Fair enough if he wants to skip another year of doing the same thing. He decides that. You will undoubtedly stay if he told Pep, in a conversation that we may not be aware of, “Look, I’m going to use you more.” The most successful team is this one.
However, I personally quit any club where I spent a season playing so little. I came up with a workaround. He excels as a player. For him, there will be many buyers.
