MARCA’s Luis F Rojo reports that Barcelona has struck a deal with keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen on a new five-year contract.
The second club captain’s new contract would last until 2028 and include a pay deferral.
Indeed, as part of the arrangement, Ter Stegen will have his income reduced for the first two years of the new contract, which will be paid in the later years of the pact.
According to the article, this decision will greatly benefit Blaugrana’s Financial Fair Play condition.
Ter Stegen will stay in Barcelona for another five years.
Ter Stegen’s representative was in Barcelona earlier this week to negotiate the contract extension with new sports director Deco. Both sides had hoped to reach an agreement on renewal as soon as possible.
The 31-year-old also hoped to demonstrate his dedication to the team by offering to cut his pay to assist them. And complete agreement is now thought to be in place.
Ter Stegen’s decision to cut his wage for this season will help Barcelona produce more Fair Play margin and benefit them in their pursuit of new players.
With Joao Cancelo’s arrival expected soon, the second captain’s gesture might ensure that the Blaugrana have no difficulties signing or registering him.
Ter Stegen had possibly his greatest season in Barcelona colours in 2022/23, breaking clean sheet records and earning the Zamora Trophy.
Barcelona had been keen to extend his contract, which runs in 2025, and his achievements last season further confirmed their position.
And everything looks to be in place for Ter Stegen to spend the rest of his career at the Catalan club.
