One of the most high-profile players in the current Manchester United squad is Raphael Varane.
One of the top centre defenders available, Raphael Varane has been a member of the Manchester United roster since the summer of 2021.
Varane moved from Real Madrid to United.
The French defender won the Copa del Rey once, the UEFA Champions League four times, and La Liga three times while playing for Madrid.
During his tenure at Madrid, Varane solidified his position as one of the top center-backs in the world.
The Frenchman was outstanding while playing alongside Sergio Ramos in both the UEFA Champions League and La Liga.
So when United signed Varane, the supporters of the team believed they had pulled off a coup.
Not at his best for Manchester United is Raphael Varane
However, the 30-year-old, who earns £340,000 per week (Spotrac), has not had much success at Old Trafford.
Varane has been severely impacted by injuries.
Additionally, Ramos, one of the best players ever and a leader at the back, is the best defender United does not have.
Without someone like Ramos on his side, Varane has struggled.
The Frenchman has so far appeared in 49 games in the Premier League.
In those contests, the defender has recorded two goals, one assist, and 14 clean sheets.
You must acknowledge that United has not been playing at their peak level for some time.
The Red Devils stumbled at times even last season while Erik ten Hag was in charge.
The position is severe right now, and it is unlikely that they will be able to contend for the Premier League championship this year.
Raphael Varane has not impressed Tim Sherwood.
Tim Sherwood, a former manager of Tottenham Hotspur, is not thrilled by Varane.
According to the Sky Sports analyst, Varane has not been a terrific acquisition for United.
On September 23, 2023 at 12:08 p.m. on Sky Sports News, Sherwood stated: “Varane, I don’t think, he has been great since he has been to the football club.”
