In recent weeks, Liverpool has been linked with a number of centre backs, including Goncalo Inacio of Sporting, Levi Colwill on loan from Brighton, Antonio Silva of Benfica, Josko Gvardiol, and Jarrad Branthwaite.
During his pre-Aston Villa press conference last week, Klopp was specifically questioned about whether he planned to recruit a new center-back. Now, the dependable journalist who posed the question, Paul Joyce, has clarified that Klopp is “interested in defensive signings.”
According to rumours, Klopp wants to add defensive additions to his midfield duo of Mason Mount and Alexis MacAllister.
At the same time that this information is out, Simon Jones of the Mail reports that Liverpool is reportedly interested in English and Crystal Palace center-back Marc Guehi.
The 22-year-old former Chelsea defender has excelled for Palace since joining the London club two years ago. He has represented England internationally and made his debut for Gareth Southgate’s team last year.
Many predicted he would attend the World Cup, but Harry Maguire and others took his place.
With a potential £50 million price tag, Guehi is reportedly desired by Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham, and Manchester United.
Guehi’s dependability, as seen by his completion of 36 Premier League games this season—in stark contrast to Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate of Liverpool, who have both been sidelined by injuries—would undoubtedly appeal.
Especially if Matip were let to leave this summer, a new center-back would be wise.
In response to the inquiry about a potential defender joining this summer, Klopp said: “We look in all departments — apart from goalkeeper, at the moment.”
The manager has reiterated that his plans for the summer won’t change in light of recent improved play.
I wouldn’t argue against the existence of a good one, he said. That’s it. As I mentioned, we need to and do look throughout the entire pitch. Definitely.”
With rumours out of Argentina indicating that a deal for Mac Allister is finalised, Klopp’s desire to bring in new players early this summer, well ahead of preseason, appears to be paying off.
Guehi would fulfil Liverpool’s requirement for Premier League experience this summer, and he is still young enough to develop into a possible van Dijk replacement down the road.
And even though the Guehi report claims Liverpool may not be able to afford the defender because they need to sign midfielders, if Mac Allister can be acquired for the reported £60 million, plus Mount for £50 million, and less any potential outgoing sales, there will be more than enough money left over to sign a defender.
The club has over £500,000 per week in pay savings thanks to the exits of Roberto Firmino, James Milner, Naby Keita, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, which adds to the optimism that several new signings are likely this summer.
