The 24-year-old England international’s contract with Chelsea expires this summer, and The Daily Mail reported on Wednesday morning that United were preparing a £55 million bid to buy him.
The amount is less than the Blues’ estimated value, which is roughly £85 million, according to the source, although United may raise their offer in an effort to land the midfielder.
A reunion with Thomas Tuchel, the former manager of Chelsea, at Bayern Munich also seems to be an option, while Mount is also attracting interest from Liverpool.
Erik ten Hag, who wants to ease the pressure on Marcus Rashford at Old Trafford, would gain another goal-scoring option with the addition of the midfielder. In all competitions this season, Rashford has scored 29 goals.
Additionally, earlier statements have come to light in which Mount recounts “falling in love” with a Manchester United legend’s playing style while they were playing at Old Trafford.
Mount acknowledges his ‘passion’ for Old Trafford
Portsmouth supporter Mount described his trip to watch his team play Sir Alex Ferguson’s squad at Old Trafford in January 2008 in an interview with Amazon Prime following a match between Chelsea and United in April 2022.
Portsmouth had players like Lassana Diarra, a future star for Real Madrid, Lauren and Sol Campbell, and ex-Liverpool forward Milan Baros in their team back then, but it wasn’t enough to beat United.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored both goals in the first 13 minutes as the 2008 FA Cup champions were defeated 2-0 at Old Trafford.
Ronaldo scored one of his goals, a fantastic free kick from distance that went past custodian David James and into the top right corner, making it considerably more memorable than the other.
“I think everyone has seen the video of when I was younger and based my free-kick off of him [Ronaldo],” said Mount, according to a quote from the Manchester Evening News. As a young child working at United, I always kept a careful eye on him. I adored how he played and his free kicks.
He scored that free-kick against David James because I was at the game when Pompey played at Old Trafford as a huge supporter.
“I saw it first-hand because I was actually at the game, in the corner, and I think that’s when I kind of fell in love with the technique and what he’d done, as well as him as a player.”
