During the celebration following Manchester United’s equaliser in the FA Cup final, Victor Lindelof was injured by an object thrown from a supporter.
Following Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s header, Jack Grealish of Manchester City was adjudged to have committed a handball offence, and a contentious VAR judgement had awarded the Reds a penalty.
Ilkay Gundogan scored the opening goal for City after just 12 seconds, setting a record for the quickest goal ever scored in an FA Cup final. On 33 minutes after that, Bruno Fernandes calmly stepped up to calmly slide the ball away to level it 1-1.
During the celebrations following United’s score, Lindelof was struck in the face by an object that was thrown from a section where Manchester City supporters were seated, causing him to collapse to the ground. It looked from the video that a lighter had been tossed.
While a few other United players informed referee Paul Tierney of the incident, Fernandes and Casemiro both appeared to be upset with the crowd.
After a brief break, Lindelof was fine to carry on with the game. The FA has not yet responded to the incident.
Peter Schmeichel made a comment about the incident while serving as a pundit for the BBC, saying: “That is really terrible. Not good.
We are in the Manchester City end, they were celebrating in front of the Manchester City supporters, and they should be big enough and winning enough to understand it’s alright to go 1-1, but I’m not blaming Manchester City — it’s somebody.
They shouldn’t respond in that way. That is awful, and there ought to be consequences. I really hope they get down whoever did that. We don’t want to see it, remarked Alan Shearer, another member of the commentators’ panel.
