Man City has not lifted a European trophy since the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1970, despite being the overwhelming favorite going into the Champions League final versus Inter Milan. The club has been working hard to win its first UCL championship ever since Pep Guardiola joined the team.
With a 1-0 victory over Inter, the Blues accomplished what many had already started to accept as inevitable for a club this talented. Given the type of game they have once again played this season, the Blues had their eyes firmly set on glory the whole evening.
The treble has only been won 10 times in history, and with City joining an elite group of only seven other teams that have ever done it (including their longtime rivals Manchester United, of course), they join the exclusive club.
But now that Pep has added yet another season that is truly amazing to his resume, that 1999 squad is seriously in contention to be the best of all time.
Guardiola ultimately broke his streak of never winning a European championship outside of Barcelona with that trophy, which is not only the first Champions League trophy won by Manchester City but also his third in his career.
With this year’s UCL victory making it 35 major honours in 15 years as a manager, it appears that his sticking point is now firmly in the past.
In addition to the fact that the Spaniard will unquestionably go down in history as one of, if not the greatest manager of all time, the current crop of City players are unstoppable and are destined to win several more titles. Congratulations and have fun at the celebration, Blues; it will be unforgettable!
