When Manchester City defeated Inter Milan 1-0 on Saturday night to win the Champions League trophy, they made history.
After Kevin De Bruyne had to leave the game early due to injury, it was midfielder Rodri who came through with the winning goal in the second half.
For Pep Guardiola’s team, who also won the Premier League and the FA Cup, the victory brought an end to an extraordinary season.
City, of course, qualified for the Champions League for the next season by winning the Premier League. However, City will enter the 2023–24 season in the position designated for the holders because they have now also won the championship in Istanbul.
Will Liverpool, who placed fifth, now be eligible for the Champions League given that the Premier League has already been awarded four spots? The response is provided below by Mail Sport.
Are Liverpool now eligible to play in the Champions League?
As noted, before City’s victory over Inter Milan, the team’s status for the competition the following year was settled.
Liverpool won’t be participating in the Champions League the following year despite defeating Brighton to finish fifth.
Instead, the position is given to the victor of the national league with the highest UEFA coefficient ranking that does not automatically qualify for the group stage.
Traditionally, the nation ranked 11th would be automatically placed in the group stage without needing to qualify.
Serbia is currently ranked 11th on the rankings. The Serbian first division champions, though, have already been assured of a spot. This is due to Russia’s tenth-place ranking. After the invasion of Ukraine, the country’s clubs are still barred from participating in European competitions.
As a result, Ukraine’s champions—the nation that is currently ranked 12—will receive a bye.
Can five Premier League teams compete in the Champions League?
Five teams from England are permitted to compete in the same Champions League season due to certain restrictions.
Only if an English club won the Champions League or Europa League this year and didn’t place in the top four of the Premier League could this occur.
These regulations were never going to apply before the competition for the next season because City won the league this campaign.
